Poitiers-Biard Airport is small, uncomplicated and refreshingly stress-free — which is precisely what you want at the start of a French holiday. Here is everything British passengers need to know, from the moment you touch down to the moment you reach your hotel.
Poitiers-Biard Airport, officially designated PIS, sits approximately 2.4 kilometres west of the city centre in the commune of Biard. It is a compact regional airport — a single terminal building completed in 2002, covering 1,400 square metres — and handles around 100,000 passengers per year. For context: this is considerably smaller than Stansted, which processes more passengers in a single morning. The result is an arrival experience that is unhurried, friendly and entirely without the chaos that characterises larger hubs. Passport control and baggage reclaim typically take under thirty minutes.
Flights to Poitiers from the UK
For British visitors, there are two direct UK routes to Poitiers:
London Stansted is served by Ryanair and operates year-round, with roughly two flights per week in the low season and more frequent services in summer. This is the primary route for most British visitors and the one around which all airport transport is organised. The flight takes approximately one hour and forty minutes.
Edinburgh is served by Ryanair on a seasonal basis, typically June through September. The flight takes around one hour and fifty-five minutes — the longest UK route to Poitiers. Scottish visitors should check current schedule availability when planning, as this route has historically not run year-round.
For visitors arriving via Paris, Bordeaux or Lyon, onward connections by TGV are discussed in our complete guide to getting to Poitiers from the UK.
Getting from Poitiers Airport to the City Centre
This is the section that catches many first-time visitors off guard, and it is worth reading carefully.
By Taxi
The taxi rank is directly outside the arrivals area and is the most convenient option for most British visitors. The journey to the city centre takes approximately ten minutes and costs in the region of €15–20, depending on exact destination and time of day. Taxis are generally available to meet Ryanair arrivals, though availability outside flight arrival times can be limited. If you are arriving on a less popular flight or at an unusual hour, it is worth asking your hotel whether they can arrange a transfer.
One important caveat: several passenger reviews have noted that taxis are not always present when flights arrive. If no taxi is visible on arrival, the airport information desk staff are reportedly helpful in arranging one. Do not assume a queue will be waiting.
By Airport Bus
A shuttle bus service operates in connection with Ryanair flight arrivals, running to the Gare de Poitiers (Poitiers railway station) in the city centre. The journey takes around ten minutes and costs €5 for a single ticket, purchased from the driver. The bus departs approximately thirty minutes after each Ryanair arrival.
The critical point: this service runs in coordination with Ryanair flights only. If you are not arriving on a Ryanair service, do not rely on the bus being there. It is not a standard scheduled service — it is an airport shuttle tied to specific flight arrivals.
By Car Hire
Car hire is the preferred option for most visitors who plan to explore beyond Poitiers city centre — for day trips to Chauvigny and the Marais Poitevin, for reaching Futuroscope independently, or for driving on to La Rochelle. The major rental companies operating at or near Poitiers airport include Europcar, Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Enterprise, Alamo, National and Flizzr. Desks are located in the arrivals area. Booking in advance, particularly for summer travel, is strongly recommended — availability at this small airport can be limited. See our separate guide to car hire at Poitiers airport for full advice on booking, insurance and driving in France.
On Foot
It is physically possible to walk from the airport to the city centre — approximately 2.4 kilometres along the Route de Dissay and into the old town. One reviewer noted doing exactly this. We do not recommend it. The first section involves a stretch of busy road without a pavement, and the walk takes around thirty minutes with luggage. Take a taxi.
The Airport Terminal: What to Expect
Poitiers-Biard is a single-terminal airport and functions as such. The facilities are modest but adequate for the volume of traffic the airport handles. On the departures side, there is a bar and a snack area. There are cash machines (ATMs), a postal bank outlet, and an information desk. Free WiFi is available throughout the terminal. There is no duty-free shop of the scale you would find at Stansted — buy your wine, perfume and whisky on the way back into France rather than expecting an airport retail experience.
On arrival, the process is straightforward: as a British passport holder travelling from the UK post-Brexit, you are an international arrival and will pass through passport control in the international arrivals area. This is a regional airport with minimal queuing; the process is typically completed in under fifteen minutes. Baggage reclaim is a single belt, and baggage appears promptly. The terminal is fully accessible for passengers with reduced mobility, with lifts, ramps and adapted toilet facilities throughout. Wheelchairs are available from the information desk.
Parking at Poitiers Airport
Approximately 400 parking spaces are available at the airport, divided between short-stay and long-stay areas. The first fifteen minutes are free — useful if you are dropping off or collecting a passenger. For longer stays, parking is charged by the day and is inexpensive by UK airport standards. Book online through the airport’s website (poitiers.aeroport.fr) for the best rates, particularly for stays of several days or more.
The airport is accessed from the A10 autoroute via exits 29 (from the north) or 30 (from the south), following signs for Aéroport Poitiers-Biard on the R910.
Departing from Poitiers Airport
Check-in for Ryanair flights closes sixty minutes before departure — earlier than you might expect if you are used to Stansted. The airport advises arriving at least ninety minutes before a short-haul international departure. Given the size of the terminal, this is more than sufficient, but arriving earlier causes no difficulty. There is a bar and seating in the departure lounge; do not expect extensive facilities. Online check-in via the Ryanair app before you arrive is strongly recommended.
Baggage rules are Ryanair standard: a small personal bag is included with all fares; a cabin bag requires Priority boarding or a fee; checked luggage must be added at booking. These rules are enforced at Poitiers as rigorously as anywhere else on the Ryanair network.
Poitiers Airport vs. Alternative Entry Points
Poitiers-Biard is the most convenient airport for the city itself, but it is not always the cheapest or most frequent option. British visitors planning a trip that combines Poitiers and La Rochelle should also consider:
Bordeaux-Mérignac: A major international airport with year-round routes from multiple UK airports. Poitiers is approximately two hours north-east by car or train. Good option for flexible itineraries that include the Bordeaux wine region.
Paris Charles de Gaulle: Year-round flights from dozens of UK airports, with TGV connections to Poitiers in under two hours. The most flexible option for those booking late or travelling outside Ryanair’s Poitiers season.
La Rochelle Airport: Served seasonally by Ryanair from Stansted and East Midlands. An excellent option if La Rochelle is your primary destination and Poitiers a day trip or secondary stop.
